Natural Remedy for Allergy Relief

An Introduction to Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) Treatments for Allergies

all about allergy treatment, we had a section on nontraditional medical cures of allergies, also known as Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) treatment. The different approaches we discussed in it were –

Homeopathic treatment
Herbal Remedy
Acupressure
Acupuncture and
Aroma therapy.

In this article, we discuss a few more holistic methods that are used all over the world for allergy treatment.

Chiropractic care
This method of allergy treatment mainly focuses on detection, reduction and correction of spinal misalignment and nervous system dysfunction. As the nervous system is the controlling factor of the immune system, chiropractic care enables it to function with less stress by freeing up the nerves. Hence, the nerves become less irritated and hypo sensitive to allergens, which helps in allergy treatment on a long term.

Reflexology
Reflexology is a holistic approach to allergy treatment that works on the principle of stimulating reflexes to reduce the allergic reactions. So, by stimulating these reflexes with the thumb and forefingers, the touch and pressure receptors of the nervous system transfer the sensation to the receptive areas of the body. This activates the body's natural healing system by improving the nerve and blood supply. The stimulus of pressure is usually applied to the adrenal reflex area (found on the palms of both hands) for treating allergies, asthma, and sinus problems.

Yoga
Yoga is an ancient Indian practice designed to bring health, happiness, and a greater sense of Self. It is often used to treat common symptoms of allergies like sinus pain and a runny nose. A process called neti or simply, saline nasal irrigation is used as an allergy treatment, where sinuses filled with mucus are relieved within moments of neti practice.
And the encouraging aspect of yoga in allergy treatment is that it has only positive effects, unlike medications that invariably have harmful side effects.

Reiki
Reiki is an ancient Japanese technique of self-healing, which involves using the spiritually guided energy that keeps us alive and is found all around us. While treating an allergy patient, this spiritual energy is passed on from the reiki practitioner to the recipient through the formers hands. For allergy treatment, the patient is asked to sit relaxed on a couch with his clothes on while the healer holds his hands above the patient. The energy transferred mobilizes the allergic components and treats the allergy. A reiki session can last for a few minutes up to an hour, depending on the severity of allergy.

Some other useful allergy treatment methods -

These are rather orthodox methods of allergy treatment and are limited to certain places where they are still practiced.

Enzyme Potentiated Desensitization (EPD)
This treatment is most popular in the UK. The process involves mixing the known allergen with a common enzyme found in the body – beta glucoronidase. The mixture is applied to the skin in very low doses, which gradually reduces the allergic rash and swelling. This treatment is commonly used in treatment of food allergies.

Ionization
A special machine that emits negative electric charges into the air, conducts ionization. These electric charges cause air borne allergens to cluster and fall on the ground, hence reducing their concentration in the inhaled air. It is specially used in dust prone areas like factories or workshops, where airborne allergies are prevalent.

Speleotherapy
Speleotherapy of underground climatotherapy is a widely used method to treat asthma in Eastern Europe. This method of allergy treatment requires a person to spend 2 to 3 hours a day in underground caves for a period of 3 or 4 months. Though it has no scientific explanation, speleotherapy has been found to be useful in curing asthma and allergic swellings of the upper airways. Many contribute its effect to the saline and mineral content of the air in subterranean caves that clears allergic rash and nasal congestion.
